SRCC Denies Social Media Claims of Caste Discrimination and Money Demand Between Students

New Delhi | January 30, 2026 Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) has strongly rejected claims circulating on social media about an alleged case of caste discrimination involving students. The claims suggested that a student from a reserved category had asked for money from an unreserved category student in exchange for not filing a complaint under the SC/ST Act. The college clarified that no such incident has been reported to its authorities. In an official circular issued on Thursday, January 29, 2026, SRCC said it has no information or record of any such event. “No such alleged incident has been reported in the college, nor does the college have any knowledge of such alleged incident happening. The claims/allegations being made are entirely the responsibility of the claimant(s),” the circular stated. College officials said the statement was released to clear confusion and stop the spread of misinformation online. They also distanced the institution from the allegations being widely shared on social media, which have sparked intense debate and reactions across platforms. The college emphasized that unverified claims should not be linked to the institution without facts. The clarification comes at a sensitive time, just a day after the Supreme Court stayed the newly notified UGC equity regulations aimed at preventing caste-based discrimination on campuses. The court observed that the framework was “prima facie vague” and could have “very sweeping consequences,” warning that it might divide society with a “dangerous impact.” The regulations, notified on January 13, required all higher education institutions to form equity committees to handle discrimination complaints and promote fairness on campuses.
