Lucknow: La Martiniere College, Lucknow, has secured the No. 1 position in India in the Vintage Legacy Day-cum-Boarding Schools category in the EducationWorld India School Rankings 2026-27, marking a proud moment for the historic institution and its wider Martiniere community.

The recognition highlights the college’s enduring reputation for academic excellence, co-curricular activities, sports education and infrastructure. According to EducationWorld, the national rankings are based on a comprehensive survey evaluating schools across multiple parameters of educational quality and performance.

A Legacy Rooted in 1845

Established in 1845 in accordance with the will of Major General Claude Martin, La Martiniere College is among Lucknow’s most historically significant educational institutions. Claude Martin, a French-born military officer, architect and philanthropist who made Lucknow his home, left provisions in his will for the establishment of educational institutions in Lucknow, Kolkata and Lyon, France.

The college’s iconic Constantia campus is closely associated with its founder’s legacy. The historic building, whose construction began in 1796, remains a defining architectural landmark of Lucknow, blending European architectural influences with the city’s distinctive historical character.

Over nearly two centuries, La Martiniere has built a reputation for combining academic learning with discipline, character development, sports and co-curricular pursuits. Its history is also distinguished by the role played by the college community during the events of 1857, for which the institution received the battle honour “Defence of Lucknow, 1857” in recognition of its contribution.

The college has continued to educate generations of students who have gone on to contribute to diverse fields, including the armed forces, public service, medicine, engineering, education and sports.

Recognition for Excellence and Tradition

The EducationWorld India School Rankings 2026-27 mark the 20th consecutive edition of the annual national survey. The rankings assess thousands of schools across India through feedback from parents, educators, teachers and counsellors, using a range of parameters related to educational quality.

La Martiniere College’s achievement places it at the forefront of India’s vintage legacy day-cum-boarding institutions, recognising its ability to preserve a distinguished heritage while continuing to pursue excellence in contemporary education.

The latest honour is a testament to the collective efforts of the entire Martiniere family and reinforces the college’s longstanding commitment to nurturing capable, disciplined and well-rounded individuals.
