Fresh details have emerged in the case of the fatal BMW accident in Delhi’s Dhaula Kuan, where a senior finance ministry official lost his life. Investigators say the accused, Gaganpreet Makkad, chose to drive the victims nearly 20 km away to a private hospital, disregarding the pleas of the victim’s wife to seek treatment at a nearby facility.
The Accident and Immediate Aftermath On Sunday, 52-year-old Navjot Singh, a finance ministry official, and his wife, Sandeep Kaur, were hit by Makkad’s BMW near Dhaula Kuan. Singh sustained fatal injuries while his wife was also seriously hurt. Instead of informing the police or taking them to the nearest hospitals, Makkad drove them to Nulife Hospital in GTB Nagar—about 20 km from the crash site. Police have pointed out that several major hospitals were closer to the accident spot, including Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, only 7.8 km away, and AIIMS, roughly 12 km away.
Sandeep Kaur repeatedly pleaded with Makkad to stop at one of these hospitals so her husband could receive urgent medical help. Her requests were ignored. Makkad’s Explanation According to her statement to investigators, Makkad said she trusted Nulife Hospital because “they had saved her children during the pandemic.” She insisted she had “no links” to the hospital, claiming her decision was based solely on trust in its doctors. However, this explanation has raised suspicions. Police have charged her with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, rash driving, evidence tampering, and endangering lives.
Questionable Links to Nulife Hospital Investigators have since uncovered possible connections between the accused’s family and the hospital. According to records from the Union Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Makkad’s father, Javinder Singh, is listed as a director in two companies—Nulife Advanced Diagnostics Pvt. Ltd. and Nulife Luxury Realtors Pvt. Ltd.—registered at the same address as Nulife Hospital. Further, one of Nulife Hospital’s directors is also associated with these companies. Police officials revealed that Javinder Singh is the maternal uncle of Dr. Harish Kumar, the hospital’s founder. Although Dr. Kumar passed away during the Covid pandemic, the hospital, established in 1992, continues to operate under the management of his children. These connections, investigators say, raise doubts about Makkad’s claim of having “no ties” to the hospital. Family’s Role and Police Findings At the time of the accident, Makkad was accompanied by her husband and their two children.
After she drove away with the injured victims, her husband Parikshit contacted his father-in-law, Javinder Singh, informing him that she was taking the couple to a hospital. Police later stated that Parikshit claimed he did not know she chose Nulife Hospital specifically. The decision to bypass closer medical facilities is now under scrutiny, with investigators suggesting that the family’s connection to the hospital might have influenced her actions.
Legal Action Against the Accused
Gaganpreet Makkad has been arrested and faces multiple charges, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, obstruction of evidence, rash driving, and endangering human life. The case has sparked widespread outrage, with questions over whether the delay in reaching appropriate medical care cost Navjot Singh his life.
As the investigation deepens, police are examining both the accused’s driving conduct and her choice of hospital, which ignored urgent pleas from the victim’s wife and may have been shaped by family ties rather than medical necessity.
