Government Rejects Rahul Gandhi’s Firing Allegation, Defends Home Minister in Lok Sabha

New Delhi, July 29, 2026 : The debate over the recent student protests in Delhi intensified in Parliament as the government firmly rejected allegations made by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi against Home Minister Amit Shah. The exchange highlighted a sharp political confrontation over the handling of the protests, with both sides defending their positions during discussions in the Lok Sabha.

Responding to Rahul Gandhi's claim that Amit Shah ordered police to fire at student protesters, Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office Jitendra Singh said the allegation reflected a lack of understanding of administrative procedures. He maintained that only a magistrate or a Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) is empowered to issue such an order and not a minister. Singh also reiterated that no shots were fired during the protest, clarifying that only tear gas was used. "Leader of Opposition has no idea of how administration works. Orders to open fire in any situation can only be given by a magistrate and not by any minister," Singh said in the Lok Sabha. He further stated, "It was repeatedly clarified that no shots were fired; tear gas was used. Since no shots were fired, the question of issuing an order does not arise. The authority to issue such an order rests with the magistrate, not the minister."

Earlier, while participating in the discussion on the anti-paper leak legislation, Rahul Gandhi accused the Home Minister of being responsible for the action against the students. Alleging that Shah "ordered" the attacks on students, Gandhi said: "The Home Minister now doesn't have the courage to face Parliament and speak on the assault of students." Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju strongly objected to the allegation, saying, "On what basis have you said this? This is highly objectionable. You should apologise." The remarks led to repeated disruptions, forcing the House to be adjourned twice.

Later, speaking to reporters in the Parliament House complex, Gandhi stood by his remarks, saying, "There can be just two options; the Home Minister gave the order for firing (at protesters), the other is that the Home Minister did not know that there will be firing." He added, "In the first case, he is culpable. In the second case, he is incompetent, there can be no other option." Gandhi also questioned the Home Minister's absence from the House, stating, "Why is he not coming to the House? Supposedly the brave home minister of India, why is he not in the House? If he has not done anything, why is he not coming? It is my right to speak in Parliament and I should have this right." Despite the uproar and opposition sloganeering, the anti-paper leak bill was eventually passed in the Lok Sabha through a voice vote.
