Supreme Court Restores Congress MLA in Sringeri Case

New Delhi, May 11, 2026 The Supreme Court’s intervention in the Sringeri election dispute has brought renewed attention to the transparency of the electoral process and the handling of recount procedures. In a major interim relief for Congress leader T D Rajegowda, the apex court restored his status as MLA after a recount of postal ballots had earlier shifted the victory in favour of BJP leader D N Jeevaraj. The development has triggered fresh political debate in Karnataka over the integrity of election-related procedures. During the hearing, the Supreme Court made strong remarks while questioning the manner in which the recount process was carried out. “We cannot let you hijack democracy like this,” the Bench observed while ordering restoration of the previous status. The court directed that Rajegowda would continue as the sitting MLA for now, pending further hearings in the matter. The controversy began after a recount and re-verification of postal ballots related to the 2023 Karnataka Assembly elections changed the original outcome. Rajegowda, who had initially won the Sringeri seat by a narrow margin, later lost following the recount exercise. In his plea before the Supreme Court, he argued that the recount process went beyond the scope permitted by the earlier court order and improperly reconsidered ballots that had already been accepted. Although the Supreme Court’s order has temporarily restored the earlier position, the legal battle is still far from over. The case continues to remain politically significant for both Congress and BJP, with further proceedings expected in the coming days. The latest developments have once again highlighted the importance of transparency, accountability and public trust in the democratic process.
