YUGVARTA NEWS
Lucknow, 2 May, 2026 04:53 PMNew Delhi, May 2, 2026 Amid a growing political clash over election procedures in West Bengal, the Supreme Court weighed in on the dispute between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Election Commission regarding the appointment of counting staff. The issue focused on the EC’s decision to deploy central government personnel as supervisors during vote counting, a move challenged by the TMC over concerns of neutrality. During the hearing, the Supreme Court upheld the Election Commission’s authority, stating that the decision to appoint officials for election duties falls within its jurisdiction. The court noted that the EC’s guidelines allowing the inclusion of central government employees do not violate any established rules and are within its legal powers. The bench also highlighted that representatives of political parties remain present during the counting process, ensuring transparency and oversight. It stressed that officials assigned to election duty are expected to act impartially under the supervision of the Election Commission, regardless of whether they belong to the state or central administration. The court chose not to interfere further and dismissed the plea, reinforcing the Election Commission’s autonomy in conducting elections. The ruling underlines confidence in existing safeguards designed to ensure a fair and transparent counting process.
