SC Quashes FIRs Against Samay Raina, Four Others

New Delhi, August 14, 2026 The Supreme Court on Friday granted major relief to comedian Samay Raina and four others by quashing all FIRs registered against them over allegedly insensitive remarks concerning persons with disabilities. The cases were linked to comments made on the show India’s Got Latent, which had led to criticism and multiple legal complaints. The development follows the accused’s compliance with directions earlier issued by the top court. Raina and the four others had been booked over the remarks, following which the Supreme Court had reprimanded the comedian and directed him to conduct awareness programmes and raise funds for persons with disabilities. A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice JV Mohana on Friday noted their compliance with the court’s directions and proceeded to quash the cases. At the previous hearing, the court had imposed a cost of Rs 3 lakh on Raina and the four others, observing that he had taken the court for a ride by not complying with the undertakings given to make amends. The bench on Friday appreciated the efforts made by Raina and the others to organise shows for the benefit of persons with disabilities. “Once there are genuine efforts positive results are bound to be there. They are very bright youngsters. If they have started working in positive direction, there will be positive output,” the Bench said. The proceedings stemmed from a petition filed by Cure SMA India Foundation, which alleged that Raina had made insensitive remarks about the high cost of treatment for Spinal Muscular Atrophy and had allegedly ridiculed a person with such a disability. The petition also named Vipun Goyal, Balraj Paramjeet Singh Ghai, Sonali Thakkar and Nishant Jagdish Tanwar. The controversial episode of India’s Got Latent, recorded in November, resulted in several cases against Raina and other comics over allegations of obscene and insensitive remarks. With the Supreme Court taking note of the efforts undertaken by the accused and their compliance with its directions, the criminal cases have now been quashed. The ruling brings an end to the proceedings while underscoring the importance of meaningful efforts towards creating greater awareness and support for persons with disabilities.
