Lucknow, 21 Oct, 2025 06:27 PMNew Delhi, October 21, 2025 Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday paid heartfelt tributes to police and paramilitary personnel at the National Police Memorial in New Delhi on the occasion of Police Commemoration Day. The day commemorates the ultimate sacrifice of ten courageous policemen who lost their lives during an ambush by heavily armed Chinese troops at Hot Springs, Ladakh, on October 21, 1959. Addressing the gathering, Singh lauded the fallen heroes and expressed gratitude to all police and paramilitary personnel for their unwavering service to the nation. He described the armed forces and the police as twin pillars of India’s security. “While the military safeguards our geographical borders, the police protect society and maintain social integrity. Both share the same mission – protecting the nation. As we strive towards Viksit Bharat by 2047, balancing internal and external security is crucial,” he stated. Highlighting modern security challenges, the Defence Minister noted that apart from border instabilities, India faces emerging threats from organised crime, terrorism, and ideological conflicts. “Today, crime is more organised, invisible, and sophisticated, aimed at creating chaos and eroding public trust in the system,” he observed, appreciating the police for their vigilance and moral commitment. He added, “The peace that citizens enjoy today is built on their confidence in our vigilant armed forces and alert police. This trust forms the backbone of national stability.” Singh also referred to the fight against Left-Wing Extremism, emphasising the significant progress made by the police, CRPF, BSF, and local administrations. He highlighted that several top Naxal leaders have been neutralised this year, while others have surrendered and joined mainstream society. Areas once labelled the Red Corridor are gradually transforming into growth corridors. He expressed confidence that Left-Wing Extremism could be completely addressed by March next year. The Defence Minister underscored the government’s commitment to modernising the police and recognising their sacrifices. He recalled the inauguration of the National Police Memorial in 2018 as a long-overdue tribute. “Today, our police are equipped with advanced weapons, surveillance technology, drones, forensic laboratories, and digital policing tools. Adequate resources are being provided to modernise state forces,” Singh said, calling for enhanced coordination and integration among security agencies for optimum effectiveness. He further emphasised the importance of a balanced relationship between the police and society. “Effective policing is possible only when citizens respect the law and collaborate with authorities. Mutual understanding ensures the prosperity and security of both society and law enforcement,” he added. The commemoration included a joint parade of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and Delhi Police. The ceremony was attended by Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar, Home Secretary Govind Mohan, IB Director Tapan Deka, BSF Director General Daljit Singh Chawdhary, senior CAPF officials, retired police chiefs, and numerous members of the police community, paying tribute to the valor and dedication of the nation’s police personnel.
