Mumbai Tensions Erupt During Eid Milad-un-Nabi Procession

New Delhi, August 27, 2026 Communal tensions flared in Mumbai’s Parel-Chinchpokli area on Wednesday night, August 26, after an Eid Milad-un-Nabi procession was followed by clashes between groups. The incident, which reportedly involved provocative slogans, torn posters and stone pelting, prompted a heavy police response before the situation was eventually brought under control. According to reports, the violence began near the Laxmi Cottage building between Parel and Chinchpokli when the procession was passing through the area. What began as a heated altercation soon escalated into clashes and stone pelting. After receiving information about the incident, senior police officers rushed to the spot, intervened to pacify the situation and reportedly used force to disperse the crowd. Additional police personnel were deployed to prevent any further escalation. A Parel resident alleged that some participants in the procession were riding motorcycles with flags and raising provocative slogans near the Laxmi Cottage building, leading to an argument with local Hindus. The resident further claimed that banners and posters in the area were torn, worsening the confrontation. Several people were reportedly injured and taken to KEM Hospital in Parel for treatment, while police detained some individuals and took them to the police station. Joint CP (Law and Order) Dr Manoj Sharma later said that the situation had been brought under control and appealed to people not to spread or believe rumours. “There is no such issue anymore. Senior officers are on-site, and the situation is completely calm. Please do not believe rumours,” Joint CP Sharma said. Police temporarily blocked roads leading towards Parel-Chinchpokli as a precaution, but normalcy returned by Thursday morning, with traffic moving smoothly and shops reopening. The incident came just days after eggs were allegedly thrown at a Ganpati procession in Mumbai’s Mazgaon area, in connection with which police arrested Danish Sher Khan, who reportedly said he acted because he was “irritated” by smoke from firecrackers.
