Meta Under Fire Over Removal of PM Modi Video

New Delhi, , 2026 Meta’s removal of a video featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sparked a wider debate over accountability and content moderation on social media platforms. People familiar with the matter said Meta’s apology may not be enough unless responsibility for the lapse is established and appropriate legal action is considered. The issue was raised during a meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology, chaired by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey. Representatives of Google, Meta and YouTube, along with senior officials from the Union Home Ministry and MeitY, attended the meeting to discuss social media regulation. A senior BJP MP questioned Meta over the removal of PM Modi’s video, in which he addressed young people and promised a severe crackdown to stop exam paper leaks. Following several questions, Meta offered an apology and “expressed regret”. “Meta chief Mark Zuckerberg must apologise for deleting the video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” Dubey said. The BJP MP also questioned why the video was removed, who was responsible and who authorised the action, particularly when other objectionable content had allegedly remained available. The MP stressed that the issue was not limited to an apology, arguing that accountability must be established and legal action should follow if responsibility is found. The MP also questioned what protection ordinary Indian social media users have if the Prime Minister’s video can be removed in such a manner. The controversy comes after MeitY summoned Meta’s global team over concerns related to algorithmic bias, its algorithmic processes and their impact on public order. Meta attributed the removal to a technical glitch, but sources said MeitY found the explanation “inadequate”. Separately, Hyderabad cyber crime police have filed cases against Meta India head Arun Srinivas and some Facebook and Instagram accounts over allegedly morphed and AI-generated posts targeting PM Modi. The developments have intensified scrutiny of social media platforms and raised fresh questions about transparency, responsibility and content moderation.
