India Tops Global Ship Recycling Rankings Ahead of 2030 Goal

New Delhi, June 22, 2026 India’s maritime sector has recorded a significant milestone by emerging as the world’s leading ship recycling nation in 2025, reaching a major target under Maritime India Vision (MIV) 2030 earlier than expected. The achievement reflects the country’s growing influence in sustainable maritime operations and its efforts to strengthen industrial capacity while aligning with global standards. According to the latest figures, India increased its contribution to global ship recycling from 30.1% in 2024 to 35.4% in 2025, moving to the top position worldwide. The progress highlights the rapid development of the sector and marks an important step in India’s long-term maritime growth strategy. The rise has been supported through focused policy measures, infrastructure improvements, and industry participation. Initiatives including the Ship-breaking Credit Note Scheme and continued modernisation of recycling facilities have helped accelerate growth while encouraging safer and more efficient recycling practices. With this achievement arriving ahead of schedule, India has strengthened its position in the global maritime ecosystem and reinforced its commitment to sustainable industrial development. The milestone reflects the country’s expanding role in shaping the future of responsible ship recycling and maritime progress.
