India Shows Steady Progress in Gender Equality Across Key Sectors: Report 2025

New Delhi ,April 29, 2026 The Women and Men in India 2025 report highlights a gradual but meaningful shift in India’s gender landscape, reflecting improved outcomes for women across education, employment, and health. While gaps between men and women still exist, the overall trend points toward steady progress and expanding opportunities for women in several key areas. In education, the report notes significant improvements in women’s literacy rates and higher enrolment levels in schools and colleges. More women are now completing higher education than in the past, indicating a narrowing gender gap in academic participation.

However, this educational progress is yet to fully translate into equal representation in the workforce. On the employment front, women’s participation in the labour force has shown an upward trend, particularly in urban regions, along with increased entry into formal jobs and entrepreneurship. Despite this, challenges such as career breaks due to caregiving responsibilities and limited flexible work options continue to restrict sustained workforce participation. In health, consistent improvements have been recorded in maternal care, nutrition, and access to healthcare services, contributing to better overall outcomes for women. The report concludes that while India has made notable progress in reducing gender disparities, continued efforts are required to ensure that gains in education and health are fully reflected in economic participation and opportunity.
