India Keeps Indus Waters Treaty in Abeyance Over Terror Concerns

New Delhi, May 7, 2026 India has reiterated that the Indus Waters Treaty will remain in abeyance until Pakistan takes credible and irreversible action against cross-border terrorism. The statement reflects New Delhi’s firm position that national security and diplomatic engagement cannot move forward together in the presence of terror-related threats. During a media briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that the decision is linked to Pakistan’s continued support for cross-border terrorism. Reaffirming India’s stand, he said, “talks and terror cannot go together.” India has maintained that the treaty cannot return to normal implementation unless concrete steps are taken to address security concerns. The Indus Waters Treaty, signed in 1960 with the support of the World Bank, has long been considered a key agreement governing water sharing between India and Pakistan. However, recent tensions following the April 2025 Pahalgam attack have further strained bilateral ties, leading India to suspend its participation in the treaty framework. India’s latest remarks underline a broader diplomatic message that cooperation and dialogue depend on a peaceful and terror-free environment. The issue continues to remain significant for regional stability as both nations hold firm to their respective positions.
