India Engages Iran Over Shipping Safety as Tensions Rise in the Strait of Hormuz

New Delhi | 12 March 2026 India has raised concerns about the safety of commercial shipping and energy supplies amid growing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important maritime routes for oil transport. The discussion took place between India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi as recent attacks on vessels in the region have increased fears about disruptions to global trade and energy supply chains. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the conversation focused mainly on ensuring the safety of ships passing through the strategic waterway and protecting India’s energy security. The issue has become increasingly important as several incidents involving commercial vessels have been reported in the area in recent days. During a media briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that both leaders have been in regular contact as the situation develops. He said, “EAM and FM of Iran have had three conversations in the last few days. The last one discussed issues pertaining to safety of shipping and India’s energy security. Beyond that, it would be premature for me to say anything,” indicating that diplomatic discussions are continuing. The Strait of Hormuz has recently become a key point of concern due to ongoing regional tensions, with multiple ships reportedly damaged in recent attacks. As a major route for global oil shipments, any disruption in the area could affect international shipping and energy markets, prompting countries like India to closely monitor the situation and engage in diplomatic dialogue.
