The outcomes of the high-level meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese reflect the two nations’ shared commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation and reinforcing peace, stability and a rules-based order across the Indo-Pacific region.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese held bilateral talks in Melbourne on Thursday during the second leg of the Indian Prime Minister’s three-nation tour. The leaders unveiled a broad agenda aimed at enhancing strategic coordination between the two Quad partners amid growing geopolitical developments and increasing emphasis on regional security in the Indo-Pacific.
Following the discussions, both countries announced a landmark arrangement that will facilitate the long-term supply of Australian uranium for India’s nuclear energy programme. The leaders also unveiled a new Joint Declaration on Defence and Security, a Maritime Security Collaboration Roadmap, joint initiatives to strengthen energy security, and a partnership focused on cyber cooperation, critical technologies and resilient supply chains.
India and Australia further agreed to accelerate negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA), building upon the Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA), the interim trade pact signed in 2022. Both sides also decided to advance discussions on a bilateral investment treaty to further deepen economic engagement.
Speaking at a joint media interaction, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the shared strategic outlook of the two countries.
“Together, we will further strengthen peace, stability, freedom of navigation and a rules-based order throughout the Indo-Pacific region.”
Referring to the nuclear energy agreement, Modi said:
“The important agreement in nuclear energy will open the way for uranium supplies from Australia and give new impetus to India’s clean energy objectives.”
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese underscored the growing strength of bilateral ties.
“Australia and India are close partners and even closer friends.”
He added:
“With new landmark agreements, we are expanding our relationship across defence and security, education, science and technology, energy security and critical minerals.”
The agreements reached during the Melbourne summit mark another milestone in India-Australia relations, reinforcing cooperation across strategic, economic and energy sectors. As both countries continue to deepen engagement through the Quad and other regional frameworks, the expanded partnership is expected to contribute to greater regional stability while opening new opportunities for long-term collaboration in trade, clean energy and emerging technologies.
