Gaganyaan Mission Nears Milestone as India Completes Major Spaceflight Preparations

Lucknow, 30 Jul, 2026 04:31 PMNew Delhi, July 30, 2026 India's first human spaceflight mission, Gaganyaan, is moving steadily toward launch as the government has shared detailed progress on critical technologies, infrastructure, and testing in Parliament. The latest update reflects significant advancements across multiple mission components, highlighting the country's growing readiness to undertake its first crewed space mission through a carefully planned and phased approach. Minister of State for Space Dr. Jitendra Singh informed the Lok Sabha, "Human-rated Launch Vehicle (HLVM3): Development of all propulsion stages and structures along with their ground testing has been successfully completed." He also stated that the propulsion systems for the Crew Module and Service Module have been developed, tested, and certified, while the engineering model of the Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) has been completed. According to the minister, the Crew Escape System, thermal protection system, avionics, deceleration system, and crew recovery planning have also reached major milestones. He further said that the Test Vehicle Mission TV-D1 and the Integrated Air Drop Tests (IADT-01 and IADT-02) were successfully completed, while preparations for the TV-D2 mission are in the final stage. The minister added that the selected Gaganyatris have successfully completed their general training at Russia's Glavkosmos, and mission-specific training is currently underway at the Astronaut Training Facility in Bengaluru. Activities related to the first uncrewed Gaganyaan mission (G-1) are progressing, with the HLVM3 launch vehicle stages, Crew Escape System motors, Crew Module, and Service Module ready for flight. Integration, testing, and comprehensive simulation exercises are now in their final phase. He also informed the House that all necessary launch infrastructure has been established at the Second Launch Pad of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, SHAR, including specialized facilities for astronaut access, spacecraft integration, testing, and launch operations. Dr. Jitendra Singh stated that ISRO is developing the Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) indigenously, and a limited version of the system is planned to be demonstrated during upcoming uncrewed Gaganyaan missions. He said the system is designed to maintain a safe and habitable environment inside the Crew Module throughout the mission by regulating temperature, humidity, air pressure, and carbon dioxide levels. The detailed update on the mission's preparedness was provided by the minister in a written reply in the Lok Sabha, underscoring India's continued progress toward achieving its first human spaceflight mission.
