Eggs Thrown at Ganpati Idol Spark Tension in Mumbai’s Mazgaon

New Delhi, August 24, 2026 An alleged act of desecration during Ganpati celebrations triggered tension in South Mumbai’s Mazgaon area on Sunday night after eggs were reportedly thrown at a Lord Ganesh idol from a nearby building. The incident drew strong reactions from Hindu devotees, who gathered at the site in large numbers and demanded action against those responsible. Police later intervened to calm the situation and maintain order. A video from the scene, which circulated widely on social media, showed broken eggshells lying on the ground near the Ganpati idol. Speaking about the incident, Akhil Public Festival Committee President Hitesh Jadhav said, “The incident that took place here today is condemnable. The arrival of Lord Ganpati had already happened, and someone from nearby buildings threw ‘Baida’ (egg in Marathi).” He further said, “After the incident, tension escalated here. We have requested that the police take action within the next 24 hours. Maharashtra’s Minister for Cultural Affairs, Ashish Shelar, has helped us a lot… We have been assured that complete action will be taken on this within 24 hours,” he remarked. Meanwhile, Deputy Secretary of the Mazgaon Cha Maurya Ganpati Mandal, Vivek Rane, said, “While we were organising the Ganpati Aagaman procession, there was a building just 30 to 40 metres away from the pandal.” He added, “Some anti-social elements from a nearby building opposite the pandal started throwing eggs at the procession. This incident is objectionable. We are demanding strong action against those responsible…” According to reports, senior police officer Jayant Meena reached the spot and spoke with devotees who were angered by the incident, while participants in the procession raised slogans. Following directions from the Mumbai Police Commissioner, an FIR was registered against unidentified persons. Police are now reviewing CCTV footage from the surrounding area to identify those involved, while additional personnel have been deployed to prevent any further untoward incident. As the investigation continues, authorities are expected to take action based on the evidence gathered from the scene and nearby surveillance footage.
