Delhi Police Tighten Social Media Scrutiny Over Protest Posts

New Delhi, July 29, 2026 Delhi Police have intensified their monitoring of online activity linked to the recent student protests, reflecting a broader focus on content that authorities believe could influence public order. As part of this exercise, notices have been issued to several social media accounts, including some operated by news portals, over posts allegedly containing abusive language directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and security forces. The exact number of X accounts that have received notices has not been disclosed. According to police officials, the action follows a detailed review of posts, videos and comments shared during and after the demonstrations. Investigators have examined content across multiple social media platforms to identify potential legal violations. Earlier, Delhi Police had also stated that more than 400 social media handles allegedly linked to Pakistan were found circulating fake narratives, rumours and deepfake videos connected to the protests. Two days earlier, Delhi Police had instructed multiple social media platforms to remove posts and videos containing offensive and abusive remarks against the Prime Minister that were uploaded during the student protests at Jantar Mantar and the violence associated with the July 20 'Sansad Chalo' march. Officials said the force's cyber and social media monitoring teams continue to scan online platforms, issue notices to intermediaries for the removal of objectionable content, and take action wherever material is found to be in violation of applicable rules. Police added that several offensive posts and videos have already been taken down, while the monitoring drive remains ongoing to identify further content requiring action.
