Assam Floods: Sarma Pledges Structured Rehabilitation

New Delhi, August 04, 2026 Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has assured flood-affected families that the state government will ensure a structured and comprehensive rehabilitation process as the state recovers from the recent floods. During his visit to some of the worst-hit areas, Sarma assessed the damage and reviewed preparations for a coordinated response to the crisis. Sharing details of his visit on X, Sarma said, “Yesterday, I spent the day on ground in the worst affected areas to assess the damages and lay the groundwork for a proper and well structured #AssamFloodResponse. I reassured the people of our Govt’s full support to them as they rebuild their lives and return to normalcy,” the Chief Minister said in a post on X. Several districts in Upper Assam continue to deal with the impact of the floods, which submerged villages, damaged public infrastructure and breached roads and embankments, affecting thousands of families. During his interactions with residents, Sarma reviewed the damage and emphasised coordinated efforts to rebuild homes, restore essential infrastructure and support the revival of livelihoods. The government has also begun damage assessments to facilitate compensation and long-term rehabilitation, while concerned departments have been directed to speed up the restoration of roads, bridges, electricity and drinking water. With floodwaters receding across most areas, the focus is now gradually moving from immediate relief to rehabilitation and reconstruction. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority, along with district administrations, continues to monitor the situation and oversee relief operations. The state government’s priority is to restore essential services, address agricultural and infrastructure losses and help affected families rebuild their lives and return to normalcy.
