Arvind Kejriwal Detained in Delhi Before Joining CJP Protest Against CEC Gyanesh Kumar

New Delhi, October 10, 2026 Former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was among four former chief ministers detained in the national capital on Saturday amid police action against protesters opposing Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Kejriwal, along with former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and former Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, was detained while attempting to join a protest organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). The detentions took place as police intervened during the protest in Delhi. Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee was stopped in the South Avenue area of central Delhi, where she staged a sit-in at a bus stop after being prevented from proceeding towards the protest venue. Banerjee was detained alongside five Trinamool Congress MPs, including Derek O'Brien and Dola Sen. They were taken away in a police bus. During the demonstration, the former West Bengal chief minister was seen sitting with a band-aid over her mouth. Reacting to the detention, Banerjee said in a video statement recorded inside the police bus, "The government is misbehaving with us," expressing her objection to the treatment of the protesting leaders. She further stated, "We the INDIA alliance will continue to fight to strengthen people's voice," reaffirming the alliance's commitment to continuing its efforts. Kejriwal's detention alongside three other former chief ministers marked a significant development in the protest against CEC Gyanesh Kumar. The incident brought the police action against Opposition leaders into focus, while Banerjee reiterated the INDIA alliance's resolve to continue its fight to strengthen the people's voice.
