Amit Shah Calls Vajpayee an ‘Ajatshatru’ Who Never Bent on Principles

New Delhi, August 16, 2026 Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s political legacy was remembered on Sunday by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who described him as an “Ajatshatru” — a leader without enemies who remained steadfast in his principles throughout his political career. Shah made the remarks at a public meeting in Nimbahera, Chittorgarh, after unveiling a statue of the former prime minister. Shah said Vajpayee maintained his ideological commitment both during his 40 years in the Opposition and later when he held power. “Atal Bihari Vajpayee remained in the Opposition for 40 years, but his ideology always remained paramount. He lived his life according to his principles,” Shah said. He added, “Vajpayee went to jail, faced lathi charges and endured the atrocities of the Congress, but never compromised on his principles.” Highlighting Vajpayee’s tenure as prime minister, Shah pointed to several major initiatives undertaken during his government. “Despite global pressure, he made India a nuclear power through the Pokhran tests,” the Home Minister said. He also highlighted Vajpayee’s efforts to improve road connectivity across the country, including the Swarn Chaturbhuj project and the expansion of the national highway network. Shah further said Vajpayee established a separate ministry for tribal development, noting that there had previously been no dedicated ministry focused on the welfare of tribal communities. Shah said the work initiated by Vajpayee had subsequently been carried forward by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. “The beginning made by Atal ji has been taken to its conclusion by Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” Shah said while referring to initiatives for tribal welfare. He also cited the election of Droupadi Murmu, who comes from a tribal background, as President of India as an indication of progress in this area. Recalling Vajpayee’s consistency in both Opposition and government, Shah said, “Neither did he leave his principles while in power nor while in the Opposition. That is why he is known as ‘Ajatshatru’ — a great man who had no enemies.” Vajpayee’s enduring image, as reflected in Shah’s tribute, remains closely linked to his principles, governance initiatives and ability to command respect across political boundaries.
