BJP Leads in Early Bengal Trends Amid High-Stakes Battle

Kolkata : Early counting trends in the West Bengal Assembly elections indicate that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has taken an initial lead, as per analytical firm Pvalue, soon after vote counting began at 8 am. The elections, conducted in two phases on April 23 and April 29, have culminated in a fiercely contested political showdown between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and the BJP. While the TMC is striving for a historic fourth consecutive term, the BJP is aiming to secure its first-ever victory in the state.

Counting is underway for 293 out of 294 constituencies, with repolling scheduled in the Falta seat on May 21 following serious electoral irregularities. The Election Commission of India ordered repolling across all polling stations in the constituency due to reported subversion of the democratic process during the second phase. Earlier, repolling was also conducted in parts of South 24 Parganas after allegations of EVM tampering surfaced, contributing to heightened political tensions ahead of the results.

The elections witnessed an exceptionally high voter turnout, with over 90 percent participation across both phases, reflecting strong public engagement. However, the process was marred by multiple complaints of EVM tampering, including reports of buttons being obstructed or marked to influence voter behavior. Key constituencies like Bhabanipur remain in focus, where Mamata Banerjee is contesting against BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari in a closely watched electoral battle.

As counting progresses, the evolving trends will determine whether West Bengal continues under TMC’s leadership or witnesses a historic political shift. The final results are expected to offer a decisive verdict on one of the most closely fought elections in recent times.
