Deadly Landslide Strikes Nagaland as Rescue Efforts Continue

New Delhi, July 19, 2026 A devastating landslide triggered by heavy rainfall has caused significant loss of life and destruction in Nagaland's Mon district, highlighting the growing impact of extreme weather in the region. The incident also led to flash floods, leaving several families affected as emergency teams continue rescue operations in challenging conditions. At least eight people, including children, are feared to have lost their lives in the disaster, while four bodies have been recovered so far, according to officials. Mon Deputy Commissioner Wennyei Konyak said, "Eight people are feared dead. We have been able to retrieve four bodies from the debris and massive search and rescue operations are going on in the area." Several houses were swept away by the landslide, and continuous water flow into the affected area has made rescue efforts difficult. Volunteers, police personnel, Army teams, and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are engaged in the ongoing search operation. The Nagaland government has expressed profound grief over the tragedy and said it is closely monitoring the evolving situation caused by the ongoing extreme weather. Besides Mon district, Tuli subdivision in Mokokchung district and other affected areas have reported landslides, flash floods, road blockages, and damage to public infrastructure as well as private property. Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio announced an ex-gratia of ₹4 lakh for the families of those who died and ₹74,000 for those injured. With rescue operations still underway, authorities have directed all concerned departments to remain on alert and urged residents to avoid vulnerable slopes, riverbanks, and landslide-prone areas. The tragedy serves as a reminder of the risks posed by relentless monsoon rains, while the immediate priority remains saving lives and supporting affected families.
