Lucknow, 25 May, 2026 07:16 AMBangalore, May 24, 2026 A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded in Karnataka’s Uttara Kannada district where eight people lost their lives after being swept away by strong river currents while collecting shells near Bhatkal.
The incident once again highlights the risks faced by people in coastal regions who depend on traditional river-based activities for their livelihood, especially during unstable weather conditions and rising water levels. According to reports, a group from Shirali village had entered the Venkatapura river area to gather shells when the sudden increase in water flow trapped them in the river. Several people were pulled into deep waters before help could arrive. Most of the victims reportedly belonged to the same family, making the incident even more devastating for the local community.
Rescue teams and local authorities immediately launched search operations in the affected area. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the loss of lives and announced financial assistance for the victims’ families from the PMNRF. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also announced compensation for the families and assured that rescue efforts would continue for those still missing.
Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious and avoid entering rivers during heavy rainfall and sudden changes in water levels. The tragic accident has left the entire region in mourning, with villagers, rescue personnel, and officials coming together during the difficult time. The incident serves as a painful reminder of how unpredictable river conditions can turn fatal within moments, especially during the monsoon season.
