Kashmir’s long dry spell finally ended on Friday as the valley experienced the season’s major snowfall, bringing relief to tourists but creating widespread disruption in essential services. The heavy snowfall has forced authorities to cancel all flights at Srinagar airport and shut down major roads connecting the region.
Officials said the snowfall was so intense that it made the runway unsafe for aircraft operations. “In view of continuous snowfall, accumulation of snow on operational areas, and the prevailing forecast of adverse weather en route, all flight operations at Srinagar airport stand cancelled for the day in the interest of passenger safety,”reported by news agencies. The airport also warned that the resumption of flights may take longer than expected.
In a post on X, Srinagar airport said, “Snow clearance activities are ongoing at Srinagar Airport, and passengers are requested to stay in touch with their respective airlines for updates.” Passengers were advised to contact their airlines for updates and re-accommodation.
The snowfall also led to closure of major roads and highways. Traffic movement was stopped in both directions on Jammu-Srinagar NHW (NH-44) due to fresh snow near the NAVYUG Tunnel. The Mughal Road, SSG Road, and Sinthan Road were also closed after heavy snow accumulation. An advisory urged people to avoid traveling on these routes until authorities fully restore them and declare them safe.
Schools in Rajouri and Poonch districts remained closed due to the inclement weather. The Vaishno Devi Shrine also received fresh snowfall, though the pilgrimage was not affected. While the snowfall has brought a scenic winter beauty to the region, authorities continue to work on clearing roads and restoring normal services.
