High Drama in Patna: Pappu Yadav Arrested in Old Forgery Case, Sent to Two-Day Judicial Custody

Patna | 7 Feb 2026 Independent MP from Purnea, Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav, was arrested late Friday night from his residence in Patna’s Mandiri area under the Buddha Colony police station. The arrest, which triggered chaos and strong political reactions, is linked to a forgery case registered in 1995 at Gardanibagh police station. On Saturday, the MP-MLA court in Patna sent him to two days of judicial custody. For now, he will remain under medical observation at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), while his regular bail plea is expected to be heard on Monday. Explaining the legal process, his counsel Shivendra Bharti said, “As per procedure, the Purnea MP first will go to Beur central jail for legal formalities and then come back to the PMCH.” The arrest followed repeated absences during court hearings, after which the MP-MLA court issued a property attachment warrant against Pappu Yadav and two others. The case dates back 31 years and involves allegations that a house was taken on rent through deception and later used as an MP’s office without disclosure. According to police, the arrest took place shortly after Pappu Yadav returned from New Delhi, where he had attended the ongoing Parliament session. Around 12.30 am, he was first taken to IGIMS for a medical check-up and later shifted to PMCH. He was produced before the court around 2 pm on Saturday in an ambulance. During the arrest, a large number of his supporters gathered outside his house, raised slogans against the administration, and clashed with police personnel. The situation worsened after a police officer allegedly used abusive language, following which some supporters manhandled policemen and climbed onto police vehicles. City SP Bhanu Pratap Singh said that the supporters had obstructed police work, leading to further action. “A separate case has been registered in connection with this at Buddha Colony police station. Those involved will be identified through video footage and the action will follow,” he said. Responding to Pappu Yadav’s allegation that the arrest was part of a larger plot, the SP stated, “We are just doing our job. The law has been worked out according to what it is saying, the law has been fully complied with and further action is being taken.” Before his arrest, Pappu Yadav claimed there was a threat to his life and called the action a conspiracy. “This is a conspiracy to kill me. I won’t go anywhere at night. The court had called me on Saturday. The Lok Sabha session was over and I arrived at Patna. I respect the court and will appear before the court at 11am on Saturday,” he said, as per those present. The charges in the case include fraud, forgery, trespassing, criminal intimidation and criminal conspiracy under sections of the old IPC, now covered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The arrest has sparked sharp political reactions across the country. Congress leaders termed it a political conspiracy, alleging that Pappu Yadav was targeted for raising his voice over the alleged rape and murder of a NEET aspirant in Patna. Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi described the arrest as “an act of political vendetta” and accused the BJP-NDA of trying to silence dissent. He said, “The suspicious death exposed the deep rot in the system, derail the case, harass the family, and shield the culprits. This is not politics, it is a question of justice for Bihar’s daughters.” Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also raised concerns, calling the incident “deeply shocking” and questioning, “Who is being Late-Night Arrest of Pappu Yadav Sparks Tension, Court Sends MP to Two-Day Custody Independent Purnea MP Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav was arrested late Friday night from his Patna residence in connection with a 1995 forgery case.
