Assam Roars for BJP: Sarma Set to Script a Bigger, Bolder Victory
YUGVARTA NEWS
Lucknow, 4 May, 2026 02:24 PMEarly trends from the 126-member Assam Assembly indicate a decisive victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma heading toward a commanding second term. By around noon, the BJP was leading in nearly 80 seats, comfortably crossing the majority mark of 64, while the Congress lagged far behind at 23. Among regional players, the Bodoland People’s Front was ahead in 10 seats, Asom Gana Parishad in 9, and both the All India United Democratic Front and Raijor Dal in 2 seats each.
Strongholds and key setbacks
The trends highlight the BJP’s firm grip across the state, with Sarma consolidating his position as Assam’s central political figure. He was leading from Jalukbari by over 17,000 votes, reinforcing his dominance in the Guwahati region. In contrast, Congress state president Gaurav Gogoi was trailing from Jorhat by around 13,900 votes. Meanwhile, BJP’s Pradyot Bordoloi was ahead from Dispur by a margin exceeding 33,000 votes, signaling a strong performance in urban constituencies.
Expanding beyond past performance
The scale of the BJP’s lead suggests not just a return to power, but a potential expansion beyond its 2021 tally. In the previous election, the BJP secured 60 seats, while its allies AGP and UPPL added 9 and 6 seats respectively, and the Congress won 29. This time, the trends point to a sharper consolidation under Sarma, attributed to a mix of organisational strength, welfare outreach, and a highly polarised campaign strategy.
Strategy and mandate aligned
The election was shaped by factors such as the delimitation exercise, which altered constituency boundaries and sparked political debate, along with a campaign centered on identity issues, including illegal immigration and land concerns. As counting continues, current trends suggest that Sarma’s blend of governance messaging and political strategy has resonated strongly with voters. If sustained, this outcome will not only secure the BJP a stronger mandate but also reinforce Sarma’s standing as a key regional leader within the party.
