Uttar Pradesh Allocates ₹1,090 Crore to Strengthen Infant Care, Focus on Reducing Death Rate

Ghaziabad | 3 March 2026 The Uttar Pradesh government has approved a major allocation of ₹1,090 crore to improve infant care and child health services across all 75 districts of the state. The funding has been provided under the National Health Mission with the clear aim of reducing the infant mortality rate and strengthening newborn healthcare systems at district and block levels. Mission Director Dr Pinky Joval has issued strict instructions to ensure that the funds are used efficiently and strictly according to financial rules. Chief Medical Officers (CMOs) of all districts, including Ghaziabad, have been directed to make all payments through the FAMS and SNA Sparsh portals within the prescribed timelines. Ghaziabad CMO Dr Akhilesh Mohan has confirmed receipt of the official budget allocation letter and implementation guidelines. To improve the quality of care, ₹31 lakh has been allocated for training doctors and health workers at the Meerut division level. The budget also includes funds to strengthen Special Newborn Care Units (SNCUs), install new medical equipment, and ensure proper maintenance. Plans include upgrading an 18-bed SNCU at the district women’s hospital, improving medical resources in PICU–NICU wards at joint hospitals, and setting up advanced nurseries in six Community Health Centres (CHCs). Medical college specialists will also train doctors and healthcare staff involved in infant care. The funding move comes amid concerns over infant deaths during treatment. District data shows that more than 40 infant deaths occur annually during nursery care, excluding deaths at home. Between April 2025 and January 2026, 29 deaths were reported among 1,233 infants admitted to the SNCU at the district women’s hospital. Officials believe that improved infrastructure, skilled training, and strict monitoring will help reduce these numbers and strengthen child health outcomes across Uttar Pradesh.
