UP Gets Permanent Police Chief After Four-Year Gap

Lucknow, June 1, 2026 Uttar Pradesh has finally appointed a full-time Director General of Police after nearly four years, ending a prolonged period during which the state's police force functioned under acting leadership. The move is being seen as an important administrative step aimed at ensuring continuity and stability at the highest level of policing in the state. Senior IPS officer Rajiv Krishna has been named the permanent DGP of Uttar Pradesh. A 1991-batch officer, he had been serving as the acting police chief and was among the frontrunners for the top post. His appointment follows the prescribed selection process and brings an end to the uncertainty surrounding the state's highest police position. The post had remained without a permanent occupant for years, with several officers holding charge in an interim capacity. During this period, the Uttar Pradesh Police continued its operations under temporary leadership while awaiting a full-time appointment. With Rajiv Krishna now taking charge as the permanent DGP, the state police force is expected to benefit from greater administrative consistency and long-term planning. The appointment marks a significant development for one of the country's largest police organizations as it moves forward under stable leadership.
