Kushinagar Buddhist Conclave Delivers Strong Global Participation and Investment Interest

Lucknow/Kushinagar, April 3, 2026 The Kushinagar International Buddhist Conclave 2026 concluded with strong global participation and clear investment signals, reinforcing Uttar Pradesh’s position on the global Buddhist tourism map. Held from March 31 to April 2 at the Mahaparinirvana site of Lord Gautam Buddha, the conclave brought together over 2,000 monks, scholars, policymakers and stakeholders, along with more than 300 international delegates from countries including Thailand, Japan, Myanmar, Bhutan and Nepal. A key outcome of the conclave was the emergence of strong investment interest across tourism-linked sectors. Representatives from hospitality groups, resort developers, real estate firms from New Delhi, BIO CNG players, food processing companies and allied industries participated in discussions, with investment potential of around ₹3,000 crore identified. Plans for development of two townships in Kushinagar were also explored, indicating long-term urban and tourism infrastructure growth. Officials said that the administration will now reach out to potential investors and stakeholders who have shown interest during the conclave to convert these discussions into on-ground projects, particularly in hospitality, transport, spiritual tourism infrastructure and allied services. Participation from over 100 tour operators, airlines and travel stakeholders further strengthened the ecosystem and opened avenues for increased tourist inflow. The conclave also highlighted how Buddhist tourism can evolve beyond pilgrimage to drive cultural exchange, local enterprise and sustainable development. Enhanced connectivity at Kushinagar International Airport, with all-weather landing capability and improved infrastructure, was showcased to global stakeholders, reinforcing readiness for higher international footfall. Local engagement remained a key feature, with participation from artists, students and community groups through cultural performances, exhibitions and peace initiatives, strengthening the link between tourism and grassroots economic activity. DM Kushinagar, Mahendra Singh Tanwar, said the conclave has created tangible momentum for the district. “The scale of participation and the presence of investors from multiple sectors have opened new opportunities for Kushinagar. Interest in hotels, resorts, townships and supporting infrastructure will directly contribute to employment generation and local economic growth in the coming period,” he said. Additional Chief Secretary, Tourism, Culture and Religious Affairs, Amrit Abhijat, said the conclave reflects the state’s growing global relevance in Buddhist tourism. “Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the Buddhist circuit of Uttar Pradesh has touched new heights, with over 82 lakh visitors across six key sites in 2025. This conclave has further strengthened Uttar Pradesh’s position as a global centre of Buddhist pilgrimage, while deepening cultural ties with countries such as Japan and Singapore through shared spiritual heritage and exchange,” he said. With increased global visibility, structured investor engagement and a clear pipeline of tourism-led development, the Kushinagar International Buddhist Conclave 2026 has reinforced Uttar Pradesh’s emergence as a leading destination in the global Buddhist circuit, while creating new opportunities for sustained economic growth at the local level.
