Democracy Under Threat? Akhilesh Yadav Targets BJP Over Governance and Electoral Integrity

New Delhi, June 18, 2026 As political discourse intensifies ahead of future electoral battles, allegations around democratic functioning and governance have once again moved to the centre of public debate. Raising concerns over institutional integrity and public accountability, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav launched a strong attack on the ruling BJP government and questioned its approach to democratic processes. Akhilesh Yadav alleged that the BJP is weakening democratic values and interfering with the democratic process. He stated that in a democracy, people remain the ultimate authority and claimed that citizens would not accept any “trick, pressure, deception or tampering” in the 2027 Assembly elections. Addressing party workers in Lucknow, he linked public participation and electoral fairness to the future of governance in the state. He also criticised the state government over law and order, alleging that incidents of crime and crimes against women have increased across several districts and that victims are not receiving justice. He further claimed that offenders are being protected. Referring to women’s safety measures, he said that the 1090 women’s helpline introduced during the Samajwadi Party government had been rendered ineffective. Concluding his remarks, Yadav accused the government of failing on issues including inflation, unemployment, corruption and land-related concerns. He asserted that the public would respond to these issues through the democratic process in the 2027 elections, framing the contest as one centred on accountability and public trust.
