Rails, Roads and Renewables: Vadodara’s ₹35,000-Crore Transformation

New Delhi, September 08, 2026 Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday launched a major infrastructure push in Vadodara, with development projects worth more than Rs 35,000 crore being inaugurated, dedicated to the nation or taken up for foundation-laying. Covering railways, highways, logistics, renewable energy, housing and urban infrastructure, the projects are aimed at strengthening connectivity and supporting economic development across Gujarat. Modi received an enthusiastic welcome from the people at the ‘NaMo for Viksit Bharat’ event. A major component of the initiative is the commissioning of three sections of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC), covering 326 route kilometres and developed at a cost of more than Rs 20,700 crore. The sections include New Sanand (North)-New Makarpura, New Umbergaon-New Saphale and New Saphale-New JNPT. Direct connectivity with Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) is expected to speed up EXIM cargo movement, improve links between industrial centres and ports, reduce logistics costs and ease congestion on Mumbai’s railway network. Modi also flagged off freight train services from New Sanand (North), New Makarpura, New Umbergaon and New JNPT, besides launching a new passenger train service between Tanda Road and Vadodara (Pratapnagar). The Prime Minister dedicated the Jobat-Tanda Road new rail line to the nation under the Chhota Udepur-Dhar project, connecting remote and tribal areas of Alirajpur with the national rail network. He also laid the foundation stones for three railway projects covering 329 kilometres and costing over Rs 9,700 crore. These include the Vadodara-Ratlam third and fourth railway lines, Miyagam Karjan-Choranda-Malsar gauge conversion and the Vishwamitri-Dabhoi doubling project. In the highway sector, three projects worth around Rs 1,780 crore were taken up, including six-laning of the Kamrej-Chalthan stretch of NH-48 and construction of additional structures and major bridges on the Vadodara-Surat section. Several Gujarat government projects worth around Rs 2,600 crore were also inaugurated or initiated. Key projects include Phase II of the Vadodara Urban Development Authority Ring Road, a 110 MW floating solar project at Kadana Dam and a new office building for the Vadodara Municipal Corporation. Other inaugurated initiatives include housing projects under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) and a water-supply project covering 11 villages in eastern Vadodara. Collectively, the projects are expected to improve transport and logistics, expand renewable-energy capacity and strengthen essential infrastructure, giving a significant boost to development and connectivity in Gujarat.
