PM Modi Speaks with Iran President, Emphasises Secure Shipping Lanes Amid West Asia Tensions

New Delhi | March 21, 2026 Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday held a telephonic conversation with Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian, discussing the evolving situation in West Asia and extending greetings on the occasions of Eid and Nowruz. The leaders expressed hope that the festive season would bring peace, stability, and prosperity to the region. During the discussion, Prime Minister Modi raised concerns over recent attacks on critical infrastructure, noting that such incidents pose risks to regional stability and disrupt global supply chains. He stressed the importance of maintaining uninterrupted trade routes and highlighted the need for ensuring that key maritime pathways remain functional. Reiterating India’s position, the Prime Minister emphasised that shipping lanes must remain open and secure, underlining the importance of freedom of navigation, especially in sensitive areas like the Persian Gulf. This marks the second conversation between the two leaders since tensions escalated in the region late last month. The issue of maritime safety has gained importance as several Indian vessels remain in the region amid disruptions near the Strait of Hormuz. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has been in continuous dialogue with Iranian counterparts to facilitate safe transit. Officials stated that diplomatic efforts are ongoing to ensure the smooth movement of goods and energy supplies, which remain key priorities for India.
