Lucknow, 5 Mar, 2026 11:32 PMNew Delhi | 5 March 2026 Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday held a telephone conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron amid growing concerns over the ongoing conflict in West Asia. During the discussion, both leaders expressed worry about the rapidly changing situation in the region and stressed the importance of diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation. Sharing details of the conversation, Modi wrote on X, “Spoke with my friend President Emmanuel Macron today. We discussed our shared concerns over the evolving situation in West Asia and the need for a return to dialogue and diplomacy. We will continue to engage closely and coordinate efforts towards the early restoration of peace and stability in the region,”. The call came as tensions in the Middle East continue to rise following a series of military actions and counter-attacks. Since the beginning of the conflict, Prime Minister Modi has been in touch with several leaders from the West Asian region to discuss the situation and explore ways to reduce tensions. The conversation with Macron reflects growing international concern that the crisis could expand further if diplomatic solutions are not pursued quickly. The conflict began after joint military strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran on February 28 reportedly killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Following the attacks, Iran launched retaliatory strikes targeting military bases linked to the United States and Israel in several Gulf nations including the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia. Over the past few days, both sides have continued exchanging attacks, raising fears that the conflict may spread across the region. Tensions escalated further on March 4 when a US attack reportedly sank an Iranian naval vessel near the coast of Sri Lanka. According to Sri Lankan authorities, at least 84 sailors lost their lives while 32 survivors were rescued after a distress signal was received early in the morning. Reacting to the incident, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi strongly criticised the attack and said the ship was struck “without warning.” In a post on X, he also warned that “the US will bitterly regret the precedent it has set.” Modi and Macron Discuss West Asia Crisis, Call for Dialogue to Restore Peace Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday spoke with French President Emmanuel Macron over the phone to discuss the rising tensions in West Asia.
