Lucknow, 15 Mar, 2026 08:37 PMAssam | 15 March 2026 Union Home Minister Amit Shah on his two-day visit to Assam inaugurated the newly built Pragjyotishpur Medical College and Hospital and launched several healthcare projects aimed at strengthening medical facilities in the state. The event comes at a time when political activity has intensified ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in the region. During the event in Guwahati, Shah also allegedly criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Referring to his style of protest, Shah said "Sansad ke darwaza par bethkar chai aur pakoda khate hain",adding that such actions are not appropriate within the premises of Parliament. He stated that Parliament is the country’s highest democratic institution and protests of this nature damage India’s image globally. Shah further said that while the opposition has every right to protest, such demonstrations should happen through proper debate inside Parliament. He argued that avoiding discussion inside the House and protesting outside goes against democratic traditions. According to him, when people from around the world look at India’s growth and the potential of its youth, such actions send the wrong message about the country. The Home Minister also targeted the previous Congress government in the state, claiming that it failed to strengthen the healthcare system. At the same time, he praised the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, saying that Assam’s health sector has seen major improvements in recent years. During the visit, Shah also inaugurated cancer centres in Golaghat and Tinsukia and laid the foundation for super-speciality hospitals in Diphu, Jorhat and Barpeta. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also announced that the state is building a major network of cancer treatment centres with support from Tata Trusts. According to him, the government and Tata Trusts are jointly working to establish 17 cancer hospitals across Assam, with 12 already operational, providing services like chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery to patients across the state.
