Amit Shah Dares Opposition to Debate Students’ Issue in Parliament

New Delhi, August 12, 2026 The political standoff in Parliament over the students’ issue intensified on Wednesday, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah accusing the Opposition of avoiding a debate and disrupting the functioning of the House. Shah said he was ready to respond to the concerns raised by the Opposition, but insisted that the matter must be taken up through the established parliamentary procedure. Challenging the Opposition to allow the discussion, Shah said, “Let's start the debate from 3 pm today. I will sit in the House and will give a detailed reply at 3 pm on Thursday.” His remarks came as Opposition parties continued their protests demanding his statement over the issue concerning the crackdown on students. Shah rejected the demand for a separate statement, pointing to parliamentary rules governing discussions on important matters. “There are rules of discussion in Parliament. I can't just give a statement on such a crucial issue. Let the debate happen and I will give a detailed response,” Shah said. He also objected to Opposition leaders using terms such as “bhagoda” against him. The Home Minister maintained that he was prepared to address every question raised during the debate and challenged the Opposition to begin the discussion by 3 pm. With both sides holding their positions, the students’ issue has emerged as another major point of confrontation in Parliament, with the focus now shifting to whether the proposed debate will proceed.
